Public Forum for Artists & Community Members
Tue Jun 29, 2010 Tue Jun 29, 2010
Location: Museum of Outdoor Arts- 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 80110 303-806-0444

June 29, 2010 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

You are invited to a public discussion about a potential new sustainable community for Englewood. The Museum of Outdoor Arts, in cooperation with the City of Englewood, is sponsoring an effort to create a state-of-the-art community or eco-village designed specially for the needs of artists and creative businesses. The project, entirely powered by renewable resources, is intended for Englewood, and would offer affordable living and working space for artists of every kind; painters, sculptors, dancers, poets, musicians, filmmakers and more.

PLACE, a non-profit that builds sustainable communities for artists, will be the special guest.

We cannot do it without you.
We want the community involved in every aspect of this effort. Your support and your feedback will determine whether or not we move forward with this groundbreaking project. Help us shape the vision. The PLACE organization will discuss their recent findings and present case studies from around the country, including the WĀV, a recently-completed sustainable artists’ community in Ventura, California (pictured above). Then we would like to hear your comments and questions. Imagine a community that produces no waste and no pollution, but only clean, renewable energy. Imagine a place where artists and others can live and create in a beautiful, healthy and affordable neighborhood. Imagine that it’s affordable for everyone. Imagine that we create it together.

Please join this important conversation. See you there.

WAV will hold quarterly all-community meetings after the First Fridays in February, May, August and November. Community members are requested to attend in person or by proxy.

The quarterly all-community meetings are facilitated by PLACE. They are meant to be attended by everyone, and the meetings are intended to consider and vote on the official business for the community.

If you cannot attend an all-community meeting, you can give your written proxy to another member so that your vote will be counted. All you have to do is sign a piece of paper saying, "I, Jane Smith of suite 100, give my proxy to John Jones, and then sign with you signature. That's it. You only need one proxy per household. (Note: a community member may only carry one proxy).

If you wish to place an item on the agenda for an all-community meeting, just send us an email with a description of your agenda item. For example, "I would like to discuss my upcoming art show at LACMA, June 1 - Aug. 1." We will ask you to keep you discussion to under ten minutes. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to include your item, but we'll let you know if we can't. You must submit your agenda item to PLACE by 12:00 noon, two weeks prior to the meeting.

If you would like to have an item considered for a vote, for example, a motion to spend fifty dollars on a dispenser for dog poop bags, then you must submit the exact motion to be considered to PLACE by 12:00 noon, two weeks prior to the meeting. We will ask you to keep you discussion to under ten minutes.

The meetings have been running too long. We will now end meetings by 1:00 pm, and table all unfinished business to the next meeting. In addition, we will ask people to complete their agenda items in ten minutes or less, and to keep their comments to two minutes or less.

We will have a pot luck before the all-community meetings. We hope everyone will come and bring a dish to pass. It's not business. It's just a get together.

Here is a very brief overview of our findings:

1. Vision Analysis (what is the intended program?). We spoke to over a hundred citizens with broad representation. A few common themes emerged.

Housing
For sale/For rent/Lease-to-own
Market-rate apartments
Affordable apartments
Supportive housing
Live/Work Designed for Creatives (Artists, Scientists, Inventors, Technologists)
Jobs
Clean-tech Manufacturing
Worker-owned cooperatives
Hospitality/Event Center
Performance space to be shared with local cultural organizations
Creative Retail/Office/Commercial
For-sale space/For-rent space/Lease-to-own space
Local/Independent Artisan shops
Espresso Gallery
Wine bar/Jazz Club/Oxygen bar
Education Space
School
University space
E-Generation™ Waste-to-Energy
Organics

In general, the vision expressed by community leaders seems challenging, but, in our experience, feasible. We also agree with community members that this vision described above would make a positive contribution to Los Alamos.

2. Site Analysis (Is there a suitable location?). We toured potential sites in and around the downtown and Creative District boundaries. Depending on varying opinions, we identified between seven and nine excellent potential sites.

3. Financial Analysis (Can we pay for the project?). We spoke to financial leaders about existing resources at the Local, State and Federal level. We also met potential lenders. Based on our experience, there is reason to believe that we can assemble the necessary funding to build a Creative Community like the one envisioned.

4. Market Analysis (Is there a demand for the project?). According to focus-group attendees, there would be need and demand for all of the above, but the emphasis was on making it low-cost. Due to the small number of community members who braved a brief snow shower to attend the public forum, this is one area of doubt for us. Note: you can help by getting Los Alamos community members to join this list and share their thoughts with us. We would like to grow this conversation to several hundred people.

5. Leadership Analysis (do we have strong support from Los Alamos leaders?). We definitely have strong, organized leadership from the Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation.

In Los Alamos, it seems safe to say that support from The Lab will be essential. We did meet with representatives from The Lab, and found significant interest for the vision. Those representatives have begun a process within Lab leadership to support the effort. Lab reps believe that involving The Lab's senior management Duncan and Alan (last names?) will be important.

We also will need to build broad community support that is strong enough to convince County Councilmembers that investing in a project like this is a smart investment, and that it will be leveraged many times over. We did meet David Izraelevitz, and Fran Berting from the council and they have not raised any red flags as of yet.

So, that is a quick summary of our findings from last week. Please let us know what you think.

Dry Cleaning Method Vs Steam Method

There are certain dry methods available for office carpet cleaning. The dry cleaning method uses absorbents that absorbs all the dirt and stains from the carpet and all you need to do after the process is complete is to vacuum out the dry cleaning agent from the carpet along with the dirt. The dry method is highly effective in situations where you have very less time and you need to clean your carpet of the dirt and grime that has accumulated

Some like cleaning office carpets with the steam method. Although this method is highly effective in getting the stains and dirt out of the carpet, this method can also damage the carpet as well. Moreover, this method is also not efficient is taking out any stain that might have altered the color of your carpet. For example, wine stains are difficult to remove from plain clothes and when spilled on a carpet they might alter some base color of the carpet itself. The steam method is inefficient in getting rid of such stains

Source: http://nationalcleaningassociation.com/

 Hello Everyone,

Just a note to let everyone know I will be manning the theatre gallery once again one week from today (Dec.3rd) for December's First Friday. We'll be mounting another Community show, Dan Flowers will perform, Janet Lamb will be doing her reading/drawings on the third floor and we will also exhibit some local Kids' work, winners of a student art contest; levels elementary, MIddle and High School. Unfortunately the two CSUCI college students scheduled for the show in the commercial space, Jami and Lindleigh, will not be here after all to round out our Students First Friday theme. We look forward to having them back on a future date, and we will continue the Student Art theme by inviting all the parents at WAV whose children may have work of their own they'd like to show to join us Friday. We will be creating a special exhibit space just for your WAV Kids' Work!!! Please join us...

I understand there are few other 'special' things in the works for the Christmas Season, I'll be posting what I know here, so check back often...look forward to seeing you all...

John Leamer-Bingham
209 by the elevator

We were excited to check PLACE’s website last Friday and find that the Colorado MOA project is proceeding to the next step. Kudos to Cynthia Madden Leitner and the whole staff at MOA for bringing PLACE to Englewood. Many thanks to PLACE for making the trip and to Chris Velasco for a lucid and intelligent presentation on the organization, its mission and projects last Thursday night.

Our world is balanced on the cusp of cataclysmic social, economic and environmental change. It’s great to discover people and organizations that combine the ability to conceive imaginative and innovative solutions with the practical and entrepreneurial skills necessary to bring them to life.

My husband is a professional artist who has made Englewood his home for thirty years. He has worked tirelessly to promote Englewood as a home for the arts through a previous term as City Councilman, as a former member of the city’s Cultural Arts Commission, and as a founding and long-time board member of Englewood Arts. I’m a construction and historic preservation consultant who has lived here for twenty years.

The PLACE plan seems to echo another Englewood housing development created in times of turmoil — the years immediately following World II. Arapahoe Acres, now a National Register Historic District, was created by Denver designer/developer Edward Hawkins and architect Eugene Sternberg, a Czech war refugee. The neighborhood reflects Hawkins’ interest in the Usonian work of Frank Lloyd Wright and Sternberg’s Bauhaus-influenced education in Prague, his studies at Cambridge, and his experience in site and community planning at the firm of Sir Patrick Abercrombie in London. Like the PLACE project, and unlike most residential ventures of its time, Arapahoe Acres was intended to be a diverse community for families of varying size and financial resources. The houses were oriented on their lots for privacy, and to take best advantage of south and west exposures for solar heating and mountain views. Their construction utilized innovative materials and methods that arose from wartime technology. All of this will sound very familiar to those who heard Chris speak last week!

Ideas relevant to the PLACE project seem to appear everywhere we look: the New York Times’ “Urban Lands of Opportunity,” and “The Arts Collective 3rd Ward Thrives in Bushwick, Brooklyn.” The Denver Post offered “National Energy Lab in Golden a Model of Super Efficiency,” a regional example of a recently completed net-zero energy project.

We both look forward to working with MOA, the city and our fellow citizens to bring PLACE’s remarkable vision to life in Englewood.

Dear Chris , WAV community , anyone who knows something more,

I was wondering what's the status of the band rehearsal space thats provided on the WAV? I have heard rumors that there is going to be a soundproof room for band practice somewhere next to the theater/gallery. However when i asked to see that space last friday it wasnt anything more than a few square feet of empty and definitely not soundproofed space behind the commercial stores, shared with the public space where the public restrooms are and a storage for kitchen equipment.

I don't want to sound ungrateful here. The WAV is a magnificent project and i am soooooo happy to be a part of it!! It's just that i really need to know, since i am a professional musician, and with my band i used to have a lockout rehearsal space in Ventura that i gave up because the WAV was supposed to provide with one!

I am wondering if i was shown the wrong room or if it WAS the right one, when will it be ready and functional.Being in music production and a sound savvy in general (and as i have discussed with Chris and the interviewers) i would like to help with setting up the space and even provide with my own PA system for other musicians and bands to work with, and eventually we could even have that space as a serious music recording studio too!.

So until the band room is done , would i be able to rehearse in my appartment with a full band (drums/guitar & bass amps/ miced vocals) ?? or should i be looking to rent another place to practice my art??

Thanks for your understanding and swift answer:):):)
I love to be here

 Hey fellow artists!
I recently moved back to the area from the east coast and just heard about WAV. I think it is a brilliant project and would love to be a part of it. Collaborating with other artists is very inspiring so I thought I'd let y'all know I was around.

I play violin, cello and mandolin.

Bands: Anybody want any string parts on a recording? I can meet with you, talk about what kind of sound you're looking for, go home, write and record the parts myself and you plug them into your recording. We can also write the parts together or record wherever you'd like. I'm open. Or use me for a live gig.

Gallery artists: Anybody want some live music for artwalks and such? I'm always happy to learn/arrange new music to fit the mood.

Thanks for reading and hope to be a part of the WAV community!
Ashley

www.ashleybroder.com

 Hello all,

Nick here, I've been working my butt off preparing the floor plans to be put online. I've created an awesome sortable unit list for everyone to get acquainted with. The actual floor plans are coming really soon! I'll start posting one or two at a time, when I find the time to pump the illustrations out. Until then browse over the awesome sortable unit list, find the part of the building you want to live in, how many rooms you'll need, if there's enough outdoor space, etc...

Hope you all enjoy! I'm off to bed (currently 3:48a). Feel free to tell us how excited your are about living on the corner of Main and Thompson in unit E-209, or how awesome the three bedrooms upstairs in W1-115 will be for your kids. I know I'm excited, how about you?

Any one out there interested in trading units? I have a open space 2 bedroom unit on the second floor mezzanine #225 / Suite #213 and would like to know if there is anyone with a ground floor unit with a garage rollup door and porch or porches, with a one or two bedroom unit that would consider trading units with me. Working with large panels of glass, I have concerns about being on the second floor moving and creating my art in this unit even though it is a spatious cool unit. If you’re interested please call me and we can discuss this opportunity 805 377-5994 Thanks for your consideration Michael Zelcer

To raise $750,000.00, we could invite 750 people to a $1000 plate dinner.

Or 375 people to a $2000 plate dinner. Dinner donated by a local restaurant close to the WAV.

With the plate purchase, a chance to win selected artworks, donated by artists. Each painting or other artwork could have a number and then placed in a bowl, with our friendly and honest WAV nun pulling the winners out. WAV would have their $750,000. - donors a full stomach and some would have an artwork, the restaurant could get a lot of free publicity now and later, from the WAV, and would then become the favorite place to eat for all Wavers and their friends.
The art donated would be a gift from artists, and a small booklet could be made as advertising for those artists generosity, and later given or sold at the WAV. Guess they could also get a plate of food.
OK...lets hear some more fundraising ideas. We're talking big bucks here. Please don't say who will pay for the food. I said - plate.. not food...food is extra.(joke)
P.S. I would donate some paintings.
