Public Forum for Artists & Community Members
Tue Jun 29, 2010 Tue Jun 29, 2010
Location: Museum of Outdoor Arts- 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 80110 303-806-0444

June 29, 2010 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

You are invited to a public discussion about a potential new sustainable community for Englewood. The Museum of Outdoor Arts, in cooperation with the City of Englewood, is sponsoring an effort to create a state-of-the-art community or eco-village designed specially for the needs of artists and creative businesses. The project, entirely powered by renewable resources, is intended for Englewood, and would offer affordable living and working space for artists of every kind; painters, sculptors, dancers, poets, musicians, filmmakers and more.

PLACE, a non-profit that builds sustainable communities for artists, will be the special guest.

We cannot do it without you.
We want the community involved in every aspect of this effort. Your support and your feedback will determine whether or not we move forward with this groundbreaking project. Help us shape the vision. The PLACE organization will discuss their recent findings and present case studies from around the country, including the WĀV, a recently-completed sustainable artists’ community in Ventura, California (pictured above). Then we would like to hear your comments and questions. Imagine a community that produces no waste and no pollution, but only clean, renewable energy. Imagine a place where artists and others can live and create in a beautiful, healthy and affordable neighborhood. Imagine that it’s affordable for everyone. Imagine that we create it together.

Please join this important conversation. See you there.

We were excited to check PLACE’s website last Friday and find that the Colorado MOA project is proceeding to the next step. Kudos to Cynthia Madden Leitner and the whole staff at MOA for bringing PLACE to Englewood. Many thanks to PLACE for making the trip and to Chris Velasco for a lucid and intelligent presentation on the organization, its mission and projects last Thursday night.

Our world is balanced on the cusp of cataclysmic social, economic and environmental change. It’s great to discover people and organizations that combine the ability to conceive imaginative and innovative solutions with the practical and entrepreneurial skills necessary to bring them to life.

My husband is a professional artist who has made Englewood his home for thirty years. He has worked tirelessly to promote Englewood as a home for the arts through a previous term as City Councilman, as a former member of the city’s Cultural Arts Commission, and as a founding and long-time board member of Englewood Arts. I’m a construction and historic preservation consultant who has lived here for twenty years.

The PLACE plan seems to echo another Englewood housing development created in times of turmoil — the years immediately following World II. Arapahoe Acres, now a National Register Historic District, was created by Denver designer/developer Edward Hawkins and architect Eugene Sternberg, a Czech war refugee. The neighborhood reflects Hawkins’ interest in the Usonian work of Frank Lloyd Wright and Sternberg’s Bauhaus-influenced education in Prague, his studies at Cambridge, and his experience in site and community planning at the firm of Sir Patrick Abercrombie in London. Like the PLACE project, and unlike most residential ventures of its time, Arapahoe Acres was intended to be a diverse community for families of varying size and financial resources. The houses were oriented on their lots for privacy, and to take best advantage of south and west exposures for solar heating and mountain views. Their construction utilized innovative materials and methods that arose from wartime technology. All of this will sound very familiar to those who heard Chris speak last week!

Ideas relevant to the PLACE project seem to appear everywhere we look: the New York Times’ “Urban Lands of Opportunity,” and “The Arts Collective 3rd Ward Thrives in Bushwick, Brooklyn.” The Denver Post offered “National Energy Lab in Golden a Model of Super Efficiency,” a regional example of a recently completed net-zero energy project.

We both look forward to working with MOA, the city and our fellow citizens to bring PLACE’s remarkable vision to life in Englewood.

Dear Chris , WAV community , anyone who knows something more,

I was wondering what's the status of the band rehearsal space thats provided on the WAV? I have heard rumors that there is going to be a soundproof room for band practice somewhere next to the theater/gallery. However when i asked to see that space last friday it wasnt anything more than a few square feet of empty and definitely not soundproofed space behind the commercial stores, shared with the public space where the public restrooms are and a storage for kitchen equipment.

I don't want to sound ungrateful here. The WAV is a magnificent project and i am soooooo happy to be a part of it!! It's just that i really need to know, since i am a professional musician, and with my band i used to have a lockout rehearsal space in Ventura that i gave up because the WAV was supposed to provide with one!

I am wondering if i was shown the wrong room or if it WAS the right one, when will it be ready and functional.Being in music production and a sound savvy in general (and as i have discussed with Chris and the interviewers) i would like to help with setting up the space and even provide with my own PA system for other musicians and bands to work with, and eventually we could even have that space as a serious music recording studio too!.

So until the band room is done , would i be able to rehearse in my appartment with a full band (drums/guitar & bass amps/ miced vocals) ?? or should i be looking to rent another place to practice my art??

Thanks for your understanding and swift answer:):):)
I love to be here

 Hey fellow artists!
I recently moved back to the area from the east coast and just heard about WAV. I think it is a brilliant project and would love to be a part of it. Collaborating with other artists is very inspiring so I thought I'd let y'all know I was around.

I play violin, cello and mandolin.

Bands: Anybody want any string parts on a recording? I can meet with you, talk about what kind of sound you're looking for, go home, write and record the parts myself and you plug them into your recording. We can also write the parts together or record wherever you'd like. I'm open. Or use me for a live gig.

Gallery artists: Anybody want some live music for artwalks and such? I'm always happy to learn/arrange new music to fit the mood.

Thanks for reading and hope to be a part of the WAV community!
Ashley

www.ashleybroder.com

For the past three weeks my unit has been experiencing intermittent loss of hot water in both bath and kitchen. The hot water was almost off all last weekend, and it shuts off every two or three days for unknown duration. Most recently, Friday evening, Feb 19th at approximately 7pm, I discovered there was no hot water. This Saturday morning, at approximately 10am, I came home to shower after a walk and there was no hot water. I am alerted to the imminent loss of pressure on the hot water side when I turn on the faucet full hot and feel for warm water starting to come out. Normally, it takes a few seconds for the hot water to reach its highest temperature. If the water stays cold, and actually seems to run colder, I have learned to expect a hammering sound in the ceiling of the bathroom, and the hot water shuts off.
I suspect that the mixing valve located in the bath ceiling is shutting down because of low pressure in the hot water circulating system. The points of low pressure are intermittent because the areas of low pressure are determined by the usage of that particular moment. If there is a rise of hot water usage in a cluster of apartments, pressure goes down, subsequently closing the mixing valve mechanism to only allow cold water to downstream apartments. This may be why it is difficult to pinpoint hot water problems at any one time. A possible solution is to identify relevant sites along the hot water circulating system and install one or two small booster pumps to maintain the proper pressure along the entire line even during times of heavy usage.

My family and I are extremely excited to get all of you moved in and working on your own personal art projects. This will be an invaulable addition to the Ventura culture and the lives of all people involved with the project. I know I have met some of you already, but if I have not met you yet you will be able to find me in the office located at the front of the building facing Thompson Ave. Being a new possition for me and a brand new building I hope we can all work together to correct any issues we may have . Also, I will be living on site in suite 212 with my wife jen and our infant son Sergio. I do ask that if there an issue that we follow the procedure that will be set up and discussed at the tenant meeting on Dec. 15th. This process will go entirerly though the office. If there needs to be a work order, that is where we take care of it . Please do not go to our suite with work issues. With this being said I am very eager to meet all of you and hope to service the needs of our community with diligence and aptitude. Congradulations from our family to yours.
With regards,
Gabriel Hernandez-Munoz

I'll start posting one or two at a time, when I find the time to pump the illustrations out. I'm off to bed (currently 3:48a). Feel free to tell us how excited your are about living on the corner of Main and Thompson in unit E-209, or how awesome the three bedrooms upstairs in W1-115 will be for your kids. I know I'm excited, how about you?

To raise $750,000.00, we could invite 750 people to a $1000 plate dinner.

Or 375 people to a $2000 plate dinner. Dinner donated by a local restaurant close to the WAV.

With the plate purchase, a chance to win selected artworks, donated by artists. Each painting or other artwork could have a number and then placed in a bowl, with our friendly and honest WAV nun pulling the winners out. WAV would have their $750,000. - donors a full stomach and some would have an artwork, the restaurant could get a lot of free publicity now and later, from the WAV, and would then become the favorite place to eat for all Wavers and their friends.
The art donated would be a gift from artists, and a small booklet could be made as advertising for those artists generosity, and later given or sold at the WAV. Guess they could also get a plate of food.
OK...lets hear some more fundraising ideas. We're talking big bucks here. Please don't say who will pay for the food. I said - plate.. not food...food is extra.(joke)
P.S. I would donate some paintings.

To have a section in the WAV devoted to crafts for the kids. THEY'LL LOVE IT!! I have boys of my own and also some nephews that come with me a lot who range from the ages of 6 thru 11 and if I just kind of spread out some sand paper, some sticks, and glue and stuff and they stay more occupied than if they were playing video games! And they walk away feeling very proud and have something to show. With the video games its almost like a complacency thing (ugh). It also doesn't cost much to keep them occupied---we basically could just toss 'em our scraps and a small space is sufficient for thier small projects. Maybe we could bring some talent out early in some little ones.
Maybe we could even have a sitter there that way the parents could spend more time shopping : ) !

Well it seems I hav made it through the current process along with some talented & fortunate others of you. While not a guarantee of tenancy my heart is much lighter these days with the possibilities.Good fortune to all of us. I do hav a current housing dilemna however I must find temporary descent low cost housing until I am able to move into the WAV, the powers willing.I am curious if any one else is in this dilemna. So, if anyone knows of a living space situation that can work for a short time I would be extremely grateful for any feedback. I live in my 26' motorhome at this time so even a space to be in that until WAV confirmation would be great . Peferably something along the 101 corridor would be ideal as I work out of Camarillo. Also I hav no pets except for a voracious flytrap plant, it is sort of housetrained but I still keep my eye on it.I pride myself on a miniscule carbon print so I dont have a cell phone at this time but I can be reached at aliquoi6@yahoo.com .Light and Peace to all, Isubahashi

In PLACE's experience, a panel of artists and community leaders should be created to develop the interview process. These selection panels would interview qualified artists households for selection into the WAV. How big should the commity be? Who should be on it? Will the commity members rotate out after a period of time? Should we have a guideline for how many artists are local or from abroad? What requirements should the artists need to meet? Feel free to leave your feedback.

I just got off the phone with D. Hazen and we briefly spoke of the need for a darkroom at the WAV. Since space is the main issue I thought it best to inquire as to whether or not anyone (with darkroom desires) would be willing to utilize a portion of their space towards this idea. Luther Gerlach along with a few other artists have expressed interest and offered their (high end) equipment to be used if such a space be found. So my question remains. Are there any applicants that would be interested in say, a one bedroom vs a studio to be able to convert that room into a darkroom? The idea is that this darkroom would be rentable however works best. Many darkrooms have hourly or monthly fees for allocated hours, plus waste removal ect. Luther teaches vintage photographic and alternative processes at the Getty Museum and would love a place to be able to continue these kinds of workshops. Please contact Luther Directly with any ideas or questions (805)452-8433 He is at the moment, in Santa Fe. Check him out in this weeks paper

http://www.santafenewmexican.com/Pasatiempo/

Will there be a policy concerning toxcity? As a painter in my studio that is freestanding and isolated I sometimes use toxic materials with ventilation, even though I wish I didn't, they are so superior in effect than the substitutes.... In a situation where air space is shared, a room, a wall or building I have a very different attitude and would hope there would be no tolerance and perhaps an outdoor area that would be far enough away designated for this serious challenge for human health.

Several years ago a legal battle by parents of a young female student who died at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts ended with the parents being awarded millions based on this issue.

I bet we would all like to hear from eachother about if and when we are accepted into the WAV! This oughta be happening anytime now, and we know what an incredible change it will make in the direction of our lives, creatively, and personally (and so many other ways).

I wanted to start this link, so we could immediately begin communicating about being admitted as a resident, and to begin learning who our new neighbors will be, etc.

I am also wondering when / if we are phoned for acceptance, if we will immdediately need to give them our preference of UNIT #???? Does anyone know for sure about this??

This is an exciting time. Best wishes and good luck to everybody!!

Mark Mollgaard
