I am a modern California pictorialist specializing in digital photographic images of landscapes, seascapes, architectural abstracts, and still life projects. As a long time Ventura resident, I would like to continue to participate in Ventura's growing art community by exhibiting and teaching. I look forward to collaborating with other artists to further the area' s reputation as a dynamic artistic center.

Originally from Norway, I have been creating visual art for over 30 years. For 15 years I worked out of my art studio/gallery downtown (Main St.) Ventura, painting commissions ( in all subjects ) and my own original art.
My own work is not limited to any particular theme or medium, but flows from visual concepts that interrupt my daily life until I create it. In my current country studio I maintain the same vocation. I prefer the buzz of people around me, which a public work area provides. Not much into winning ribbons, but love the one on one people contact.

Not originally from the area, I have maintained a professional studio here in Ventura for the last 4 years. Most of my day to day work includes murals, commissioned paintings and restoration for hospitality, commercial and residential projects. I work in all mediums but prefer oils; I also specialize in Italian quadratura painting. I am an internationally traveled street painter - trying to spread the street painting word, working with non-profits in communities to advance arts education though out the world. I think Ventura is a wonderful place to live and work and am very excited about the entire WAV concept. It couldn't come at a better time!

This is exactly the type of resource we hope WAV will generate for the broader artistic community. I'll take this opportunity to plug Sylvia Bartoli's webpage--she did all the fantastic artwork for the PLACE website. Take a look at her edgier work as well at http://www.sazacat.net

I actually don't have a website for my artwork (which is strange, I make websites for a living...) so I've taken the liberty to attach some photos of my work. I've attached my oldest and newest work below (can you guess which is which?).

I do have a website for my photography (which I do more commercially than painting): http://nickgoodenough.net/flash/

Thank you for making it easier to find your article. As I am reading I wonder, where are the men in this equation? If a Nigerian woman has an average of 8 children, do they take any responsibility for their part in producing this many children in such abhorrent poverty?
  16.
i think the benefits of being able to travel is to gain a perspective that is different that what we are accustomed to. having 8 children is not unreasonable when many of the children you have end up passing away from malaria, dehydration, etc. and when there is little left to do but focus on family and community. some might argue that what we as americans gain in terms of financial wealth, some african communites gain in family and community. i once turned the camera on myself and had a woman with fistula interview me. her first question was "why do americans who have so much money only have 1 or 2 children?" the perspective is different...but not "wrong."

My question was...where are the men in this equation. Do they provide for them?

My family all had many children. My grandmother had 14 and also lived to be 95 years old. It was difficult to feed everybody, so they were poor and children had to work also, at an early age. Nevertheless the men were the main providers. What is the family structure like in the communities you visited?

okay, maybe i misunderstood your question. it is a tricky one to answer bc it is complex but i'll at least give you my opinion.

the men i have interviewed in the more rural areas are the decision makers and income generators of both the family and the community while the women primarily are the caretakers. there is a large emphasis on community structure and responsibility which is why men often leave to find work elsewhere. unfortunately, women bear most of the labor involved in keeping the family and community entact with fetching water and firewood, cooking, taking care of children, etc. but often times lack a voice when it comes to decision making about that community.

but many men i interviewed also expressed concern and love for their wives and daughters. a man who married off his daughter at 12 said he chose to do it bc at least she would be taken care of. (he negotiated that no intercourse would happen until she began her period.) another man i interviewed with aids was concerned about feeding his grandchildren and the large number of orphans he was caring for bc he was no longer healthy enough to work in the farm.

when it comes to the "population issue" large families mean more individuals who can work to support the family. with increase in access to education, these traditions are changing a bit. more families realize smaller families mean more quality investment in each child. but again, so many communities are more reliant on agriculture than business, that it still makes more sense to have hands to help feed the family. also, with so many children dieing under the age of five (primarily due to malaria and/or dehydration), there is a different perspective of what having children for a family means.

i guess the point of my article was that we are inclined to target the individual as the one who is responsible for some of the issues going on in poorer countries but my belief it is has so much more to do with the macro issues. if people had access to high quality of living like we have here in the states, i don't think we'd see so much of the harmful cultural traditions that we hear so much about. some of these customs just make sense or are necessary given the context.

hope that helps. if you want to see my full film which addresses some of the socioeconomic issues leading to women developing obstetric fistula, you can visit this link at the international musem of women:

Thank you for the clarification. You are a woman with great concern. These are very complex issues as you say. Your specific concern then is obstetric fistula. You must be a nurse...or doctor. Are you?

I'm kinda a strange one... i'm an animator living in the area who has produced animation for various places ranging from MTV to Nick Jr. This is my day job.
My career/hobby is to be an actress/preformer. I currently wrestle for independent lucha libre shows in the los angeles area. My main show is called Lucha Va Voom www.luchavavoom.com. I also do a lot of acting and stunt work in los angeles area.

My fiance is also a working artist. He spent the majority of his life working in comic books. He is now working full time as a toy sculptor/molder and spends any extra moment he may have doing freelance photography and illustration work. His true passion however is writing and he does so constantly...poetry, scripts, etc.

My *site* is merely my myspace page, but it'll give you a little clue about what i'm all about and show you some videos and photos of my work and any upcoming shows i may have. I'm currently designing my fiance's site as we speak, but as soon as i'm done, i'll post it here as well.

Thanks everyone, this project is amazing, and i can't wait to see what kind of life it brings to the area. =)
    sincerely,

    Hi everyone.

My name is Mike Lemos. I'm an illustrator/painter & graphic designer working in both traditional & digital mediums, in various styles, primarily for toy and related industries.

I grew up in Los Angeles Co. and moved to Ventura in 2000 when I went to work full time for a local toy company. I now freelance full time and have been doing so for about the last seven years or so.

I'm also an "official" Star Wars artist ;-)

I have two links for my art. The first is for my blog where I have samples of my work related to design & illustration for kid's (demographics), t-shirts, toys, logo design, trading cards, etc., and some of my personal work:
    http://www.mlemos.blogspot.com/

And the other is my coroflot portfolio where I have design work related to young adults, specific toy industry, & character concept design & illustration samples:
    http://www.coroflot.com/public/individual_work.asp?from_url=true&individual_id=191410&sort_by=1&

Hope you'll check it out, maybe leave some comments and enjoy my work...

    Thanks.

    Hi,
Looking at the entry dates there seems to be a slowing of interest. Only a couple of recent comments. Everyone must be working on their art.
Summer is almost here and lets all travel and share our art experiences on the road. Quick sketches of vacation sites or people. Just a thought.
My thoughts are that there is supposed to be 54 lofts and I'm pretty sure there will be hundreds who apply. There are loads of artists in the Ventura area
and many outside this area who are interested. What originally started as an aid to artists in Ventura County may turn into a difficult selection process.
I'm not closed to Artists from other countries, I think that we have a lot great talent to exchange. What are YOUR thoughts?
    RitaJ.

The "Show Off You New Work" and "What is Inspiring You Lately " are the most popular discussion groups right now. There is a ton of WAV input to process overall, so I make sure I check the site at least once a day

The ratio of artists seeking low income lofts vs. the number of artists vieing for them should make anyone who actually survives the selection process and end up selected feel very priviledged no matter where they now currently reside.

Gosh, Floating...traveling and creating some art sounds really wonderful! I wish I could do that. I hope you are going to. I am not able to do it, at this time due to art commissions I am working on. I also have a part time job.(3 days) I will have to take some short trips and be happy with that. There are many places locally that I want to see. So many things to paint. We are really surrounded here in So.Calif. with such abundance of choices. It's great. Mountains, deserts, beaches.
Oh! I love the El Jardin building. Bet you miss it.
About artists from other countries. You know once this get going and artists are settled in and making some noise, it will attract artists from all over I think. If there was a place for them to show, like an invitation gallery, that would help. They may not qualify to live at the WAV since it is restrictive in the income level. So, very established and financially successful artists would have to rent the penthouse. ha-ha Why not? If there was a gallery for them to show in...they would. Of course I am talking visual artist here. There will be others, hopefully.

WOW!!! Rita...your website is absolutely beautiful!. Your paintings are so fantastic and alive with color. You are truly a master. I love your subjects, and the sizes you choose. I know these, and all your paintings are being admired all over the world! As they should be.
I wish you great success with your website. So nice and easy to use.
Mine is still a big glob, but I am working on it...along with everything else I am doing.

I am not sure about how you should choose your search engines. There are many besides Google. Maybe you should ask your instructor, or your own Internet provider. Mine is Earthlink, and they are extremely helpful with everything.
Only one thing came to mind. Your website name. Can't you use your own name? People know you and would type that in, and get your website.
I am going to try typing in Rita Joyce, right now and see what happens.
Super fabulous, Rita. You did a great job.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm still going to make a couple of changes.

I just bought an I-MAc computer and for $99. they transfer your stuff off your old computer P.C. into your new one.
This also iincludes one year of classes once a week. I bought the dot mac program which they are showing me, how to use it to create my web page. there are templates to choose from and you just fill them in. I did my bio in word then moved it over onto the page. The photos are in I-photo and dragged and dropped into place.
I'm thrilled to learn this project.
